Anita Scherer Reikes' Obituary
Anita Scherer Reikes, 98, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away January 20, 2021. She is survived her children, Marc Reikes (Debra Reikes), Vicki Reikes Fox (Rabbi Steven Fox), and Jill Reikes Bauman (Steve Bauman), her grandchildren Stephanie Reikes (Mitchell Momanyi), Bailey Reikes Fox, Adam Lee Fox, Jay Morris Bauman, and Barrie Bauman Silverman (Cole Silverman), and her great-grandchildren, Blake Silverman and Beau Silverman. Anita is also survived by Rosemina Estime, her devoted friend and wonderful caregiver. She was predeceased by Dan Reikes, M.D., her loving husband of 71 years, her parents, Morris and Lee Scherer, and her brother, Melvin Scherer.
Anita was born and raised in the Bronx. She graduated from New York University prior to World War II. Anita and Dan married on May 4, 1943. In 1953, they settled in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where Dan established his radiology practice which grew to become Hattiesburg Radiology Group. While in Hattiesburg and raising her children, Anita was active in numerous community activities, serving in many leadership roles. She was President of the Mississippi Medical Auxiliary and chaired the Stop Measles Campaign including Hattiesburg’s Rub Out Rubella Day. She was active at Temple B’nai Israel, and served as President of the Sisterhood and later of B’nai B’rith Women. She also volunteered at Forrest General Hospital as a Grey Lady, a special volunteer branch of the Red Cross.
In 1986, they retired to Ft. Myers, Florida where they enjoyed 27 years of active, independent living. Anita stayed youthful and fit into her 90s by playing bridge, tennis, golf, and teaching water aerobics
In early 2014, Anita and Dan moved to Lantana, Florida. Dan died on November 14, 2014. Anita’s last move was to Boca Raton in 2017.
Funeral services were held on January 21, 2021 in Lantana. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Henry S. Jacobs Camp Scholarship Fund, 3863 Morrison Rd., Utica, MS 39175.
