WWII Veteran / USMC 1st Battalion 7th Marines
"Last known survivor of the Weapons Company"
George Bowdry Mason, 98, Retired of Lake Park, FL died Sunday, February 26, 2023,
at his residence.
We respectfully encourage “The Few, The Proud” and any Military veteran to attend his service to
provide USMC Mason with his final “Ooh Ra”.
Mr. Mason was born in Sebastian, FL, the son of George B. Mason and Janie Lastinger. He was a resident
of Palm Beach County, FL since 1928.
George B. Mason enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps January 1942, served with the 1st Marine Division
7th Marines (1/7) in WWII. He fought in the fierce Battle of Guadalcanal serving under Chesty Puller and
John Basilone.
Survived by two daughters, Gail Albritton of Ocklawaha, FL and Terri Overton of Maryville, TN; 14
grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
wife Vista Gorenflo Mason; three children, Linda Mason Ellis, Shirley Mason Vansoest, and George B.
Mason Junior. Also preceded in death by three grandchildren April Ann Donth, Kevin Mason, and
Michelle Vansoest.
Special thanks to his Caregiver and Best friend - Franchot Donth (grandson) for the
loving care he provided for George.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 02, 2023, from 1:00 - 1:30 PM
Graveside Palm Beach Memorial Park - 3691 N. Seacrest Blvd, Lantana, FL 33462
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests attending the graveside service to show
support for this WWII Veteran who gave his all at the battle of Guadalcanal "Saving
Henderson Field"
