Ivy Maud Brown's Obituary
On October 24, 2022, Ivy Maud Brown was called home to be with the Lord. Ivy was born on May 01, 1929, in the district of Mt. Hermon in St. Catherine, Jamaica, to Rosetta James. She was the mother of two children, Vincent Thomas (Pops) and Horace Smith (Bobby). She was a lifelong member of the Emmanuel Fellowship Center for almost her entire life in America.
Ivy was known to friends and family in Jamaica as Pet, where she attended Lucky Valley All Age and High School in Bog Walk. After finishing school, she was the proud owner of a restaurant that served her community in Whitfield Town for many years before venturing into retail in the Ocho Rios market until she migrated to America with her younger sister Beatrice in 1981.
Shortly after arriving in America, Ivy landed a position at Bethesda Hospital as a housekeeper. She obtained awards throughout her years as a great employee until her retirement at 65. After retiring from Bethesda, Ivy worked as a nurse’s aide providing care to patients in their homes until she could not continue working.
Ivy loved her church, her grandkids, and gardening. She loves caring for her home and she is always planting something for those who know her. She had various Jamaican plants at her house, from plums, peppers, ackee, sweet sop, peas and so much more. She was a pet lover and had 2 dogs throughout most of her life. She would cook them pasta and chicken for the week when she worked as she believed they deserved the best and package dog food was not her thing. In her later years, she became a cat lover and would take in many stray cats to keep her company. She fed and took great care of them and most evenings you could find her sitting on the porch with them by her side.
Ivy was unique, different and one of a kind. As we all know, she had a way of just saying whatever was on her mind most of, if not all, the time. However, when needed, she would make herself and her wallet available to help everyone. Unfortunately, in the last few years of her life she had been unable to do most of what she loved, including attending church services due to dementia and other health issues. In July 2022, Ivy lost her first-born son Vincent (Pops) to a tragic accident and though her illness prevented her from being present, she was greatly represented by the family and friends that love her. She would have been equally grateful for the love and support provided by her church family during that time.
Ivy leaves many to cherish her memories. Her only remaining son Bobby, all her grandkids (too many to name) and great grandkids both here in America and those back in Jamaica who are unable to be here in body, but we know are all here in spirit, her remaining family, friends, and church members as we gather here to say goodbye to Ivy Maud Brown on this blessed day that we lay her down to rest.
