Lawrence Amsden's Obituary
Lawrence (Larry) Whalley Amsden was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island July 17, 1922 and passed away on September 20, 2018 at the Heron Point Nursing Home in Brooksville, Florida. He is survived by his son David L. Amsden, daughter JoAnn O. Bowe, his sister Marion Picard, granddaughters Michelle Williams, Sheena Bowe, and two great granddaughters Raelynn Janeen and Amiyah Marie. Larry grew up in Hope, graduating from Cranston High School in 1940. After serving in Europe during World War II, in the Army Air Corp, on a B-26 Martin Marauder aircraft with nose art "Flying Ginny," earning a Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal and the European, African, Middle-Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with 5 Campaign Stars, he returned to Rhode Island and married Ivy Elizabeth Whittaker of Oaklawn. He made a living in maintenance working at the Bradford Soap Works in West Warwick until 1959, when he moved his family to North Palm Beach, Florida and he retired as a foreman in the Jet Test area at Pratt & Whitney in Palm Beach County. Some time after Hurricane Andrew, in the mid 1990's, he and his wife moved to Spring Hill, Florida. His wife passed away January 17, 2009 at Brooksville Nursing Home. He enjoyed golfing, deep sea fishing, and being outside. He was a long time member of the Masons (70 years), Shrine, Elks (40 years), and the American Legion. Larry was always known for helping others and was a wonderful loving father and husband. He will be missed by many.
