Marvin H. Sorkin's Obituary
Marvin H. Sorkin age 90 of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida passed away peacefully on August 11, 2014. Marvin was born on February 1, 1924 in Passaic, New Jersey to the late Mr. Abraham Sorkin and the late Mrs. Leonora (nee Cohen) Sorkin. Marvin served his Country meritoriously and with uncommon valor during World War II serving in the United States Army Infantry under the 1st United Army Infantry making up the "Big Red One". He and many of his fellow comrades served this Country valiantly and with pride, giving not only loss of limbs but on more than one occasion loss of life; so that we could enjoy the simple freedoms that we enjoy today. The "Big Red One" or "Fighting Fists" as they are sometimes called stormed the beaches of Normandy to overthrow the German Nazi Troops that had invaded the territory in what was called Operation Overload on that legendary day known as D-Day which Marvin had survived. Marvin recieved the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal for his contribution and efforts to helping the United States during this most infamous battle. After the War, Marvin came home and married the love of his life, Janice Sorkin and they started a family together. Marvin opened his own business in Orange, New Jersey and was the owner of Foods Plus for many years before eventually retiring. In 1991 Marvin and his wife moved to the Palm Beach County area coming from West Orange, New Jersey to retire and enjoy the warm South Florida Sunshine. Marvin joined and became a member of the Jewish War Veterans, where he could enjoy the company of other Brothers in Arms from the WWII era. He also loved to take in 18 holes of Golf on the local greens throughout South Florida. He worshipped and attended Temple Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Greenacres, Florida. But his greatest love was spending time with his family and friends, most especially with his grandson, Dylan. Marvin's memory will be forever honored and treasured by his loving daughter, Janice Sorkin; and his grandson, Dylan Sorkin. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Sorkin and his son, Lawrence B. Sorkin. A Jewish Funeral Ceremony will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Palm Beach Memorial Park Funeral Home, 3691 Seacrest Boulevard, Lantana, Florida 33462, (561) 586-1237 with Rabbi Moshe Chepowitz officiating.
