Robert George Zimmerman's Obituary
Obituary for Robert Zimmerman
Robert "Bob" George Zimmerman of Atlantis, FL, passed away on January 27, 2019, aged 97. His family mourns deeply the passing of this great and humble man. Bob was born in Youngstown, Ohio on November 3, 1921, to Irwin and Helen (McDonald) Zimmerman. He joined the USAF in May 1943 and flew 28 missions in Africa, the Middle East and Europe in his P-38 fighter. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Air Medal and the Distinguished Unit Citation. Bob was shot down over Bulgaria in June of 1944 and interned in Bulgaria as a POW for 6 months. On his return to the US, Bob met Agnes Winters. They were married after a five-day courtship. Over their 55-year marriage, they raised two children, Lynn and Robert, and welcomed three grandchildren. He was a dedicated and doting father and active member of the community. He was loved for his patient and steady support, always without judgment. He loved unreservedly and earned the respect and love of all who knew him.
Bob began his career with Ohio Edison & Pennsylvania Power hand-delivering bills. His many talents saw him rise to Executive VP with the utility. He retired early to Atlantis, FL, preferring golf and time with family to corporate acclaim. He was a well-loved community member, filling his retirement with activity and a wide social circle. In her final years, Bob was a tender, patient caregiver for his wife, Agnes. Following her death in March 2000, Bob was lucky enough to find love a second time with an old friend, Marjorie Lewin. They were married in November 2000 and delighted their families with their deep and abiding love. Together they played golf and cards and cared for their dog, Pippa. Their marriage brought together two lucky families, who have since celebrated many happy occasions, and who are now united in their grief for this great man.
Bob is predeceased by his wife Agnes, sister Norma and grandson Mason. He is survived by his wife Marjorie, children Lynn (John) Roberts and Robert (Ellen) Zimmerman II, niece Cheryl Guy, grandchildren, Ariel and Haley, grandnephews, Justin and Jack and a large family of stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
