Marion K. Dettbarn's Obituary
Marion Katherine Dettbarn
“Some leaders are born women.” – Geraldine Ferraro
Marion Katherine Dettbarn, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 6th, 2022. Marion was a beautiful, vibrant woman who lived her life with passion and grace.
Born on December 19, 1935 in the Bronx to Peter McNulty and Susan (Traynor) McNulty, Marion and her late husband Thomas Dettbarn raised their eight children in Goshen, New York. In 1979, they moved to Boone, North Carolina where they lived a nature-inspired life filled with tennis, music and art for the next 35 years. Marion’s outgoing personality blessed her with many life-long friendships. She eventually retired to Palm Springs, Florida to play tennis year-round. Active in her condo community, Marion organized shuffleboard, took painting classes, and participated in social events. She continued to play tennis into her 80’s, recently switching to pickleball. Marion was an active member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Palm Beach, Florida, serving proudly as a lector and a Eucharistic Minister.
Marion was a staunch supporter of family togetherness and her children were so proud of their beautiful Mother. She loved concert-going and attending shows wherever she lived. Marion was the most competitive person in the family and was always ready for a game.
Marion is survived by her children Katherine (William), Patricia (Colin), Richard (Christina), Nancy (Vinnie), Susanne (Darren), James (Maureen), and Stephen (Juleen), 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, as well as siblings Eileen and Thomas McNulty. Marion was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, and their son Thomas (Vivian). Marion enjoyed the best of her golden years with her close friend, Ted Anselmo.
