Fought in WWII / present at Dunkirk / Greatest Generation
We have lost a very special person this past week. Peter Spiller died Tuesday Morning at JFK hospital. Peter had passed his 90th birthday in the last few months. He was another of the Greatest Generation that have left us. He served in WWII and was present at Dunkirk. Enough cannot be said about those brave and tireless men. Everyone did their duty and Peter was among them. Like most of them he did not like or want to talk about those years. He kept the memories of his companions close to his heart.
Peter was a true Gentleman with deep Scottish roots. He was beloved by all that knew him. You could not help but like Peter. He was the SASPBC Quartermaster for many years. He and Bob would setup and then stow all the flags and sound equipment for the monthly meetings, Burns Dinners, and Kirkings. It was Peter and Bob and Larry and Jim that setup the tents for the South Florida Scottish Games for many years. It was Peter and Bob and Al and Burt and others that made traveling exhibits to further Scottish interest in Palm Beach County. One of his proudest moments, each year, was as the Bearer of the Haggis at the annual Burns Dinners. Peter was presented the Jack Gibb Award in 2006 and proudly wore the medal on many occasions.
