Steven Smith's Obituary
Dr. Steven Smith was 84 years old when he passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Everett, Massachusetts on August 4, 1940 to Eli Smith and Rose Krepkin Smith. He was the middle child of 3 siblings an older brother, Edwin Smith, and a younger sister, Bryna Smith Glater. He grew up in Chelsea, Massachusetts with humble beginnings. He worked hard to overcome extreme shyness as a child and young adult to persevere and become successful in his career as a Medical Writer. He studied at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received his Doctorate (PhD) in Neuroscience and Pharmacology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He was an Associate Professor at Penn State. After working at the Hershey Medical Center, in Hershey Pennsylvania, he accepted a job in Chicago, Illinois at the American Medical Association (in 1981) until he was semi-retired. He continued to work in freelance Medical Writing up until 2 years ago. He is survived by three of his children: Marc Smith, Hope Smith Overly, and Lori Blackman; Son-in-laws, Stuart Blackman and Kirk Overly; and Grandchildren, Shayna Blackman, Jared Blackman, Kayla Blackman, Ayden Overly and Dylan Overly; and ex-wife, Roberta Smith.
He was a wonderful father and a best friend to many. He loved to dance and enjoyed singing and acting in plays with the City of Hope in Chicago. He loved living in Florida for 20 years. Due his progressive Parkinson's diagnosis he moved to Greer, SC one year ago to be near his daughter, Lori, and family. He fought his Parkinson's battle with courage, bravery and determination. We will forever miss him!
