William Shumelda's Obituary
William "Bill" Shumelda, born March 28, 1925, died peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2014. Born in New York City, Bill grew up on Long Island where he met his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Alice. He was a Detective on Long Island and retired to Juno Beach Florida in 1972 to help complete his dreams. When World War II started Bill was already enrolled in a military academy that allowed him to enter the Army Air Corps where he advanced quickly to become the Sergeant in his Flight Crew. He received the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal for his admirable service. After being discharged, Bill worked with the Nassau County Police Department as a Detective. Bill moved with his family to Juno Beach in 1972, where he served as Chief of Security in Lost Tree Village. He helped establish protocols for security along the North Palm Beach coastline and worked with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's department being welcomed and respected wherever he went with over four decades of service. Bill was a founding member of the Palm Beach Square Club, and a Master Mason for over 60 years. Of all his roles, Bill will be most remembered as the man who could put a smile on anyone's face; his famously unique jokes will always be remembered and cherished by his family: his devoted wife of 68 years, Dorothy Alice Shumelda; his three loved children, William J. Shumelda, Dorothy Godwin, and Steven Shumelda; his eight adored grandchildren, James Godwin and his wife, Natalie, Jenna Godwin, Elizabeth Irtenkauf and her husband, Jeffrey, William Godwin, Jennifer LaBreche and her husband, David, Heather Shumelda Fros, Kaitlyn Shumelda, and Joshuah Shumelda and his wife, Tania; his eight precious great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and close friends. The United States Army will be in attendance to present Military Honors to his family at the funeral home.
